Bring the Monster Out of your Xbox - GZ's Gamelink 300X Monster Cable Review
by The Badger

It's that same skepticism people had when DVD players first came out. "Oh how much better can you make a picture?," people asked with a mixture of disbelief and fear that their VHS tapes might really be on their way out. It's really the same with car stereo systems. I never believed it was such a big deal until my car got the works, and now I'd rather listen to my favorite music in my car than on my home stereo. So, there was no doubt in my mind at all that once I plugged in my brand spanking new Xbox console with Monster Cable's Gamelink 300X, I would never go back to ordinary cables.

In case you've never heard of Monster Cables, it's only because you've never thought to take your gaming to the ultimate. Take a wander around your local Best Buy for instance. You won't be able to walk very far before you encounter another product by these technological gurus. They've been in the gaming realm for a while, but they've very recently released a line of audio and visual enhancing cables just for the Microsoft Xbox. Starting with the Gamelink 200X, 300X, and 400X varieties which do double duty for your AV senses, and moving on to the Lightwave 100X (for audio enthusiasts), and the Gamelink X-Link (Ethernet cable goodness for you Xbox net workers) - Monster Cables have you covered. So plug these babies in and take that power in the case for a real spin.

The TECH Stuff
As mentioned above, I personally tried out the Gamelink 300X. The first obvious difference between the 300X and ordinary cables (other than the rather dashing green and black cable design), is the fact that the normal 3 pin hookup now substitutes an S-Video hookup, much like your home DVD player. When I say these contacts are as good as gold, I'm not just being metaphoric - you'll notice these contacts are 24K Gold, which improve conductivity and signal transfer. There's an even bigger list of hi-tech innovation used in these cables that you just have to see:

  • The cables themselves are double shielded (a mylar foil and copper brain) for reduction of interference
  • It uses a Nitrogen gas-injected dielectric insulator, which, tech-words aside, means that the video signal strength is maximized
  • The copper center conductor is finely constructed and super fine, to help reduce signal loss and super linear video bandwidth to 550MHz
  • A split tip center pin provides greater contact pressure and lower distortion
  • The contacts, on top of being 24K gold, are what is called 8-cut, to help reduce corrosion and increase contact pressure
  • The conductors on these cables are dual "balanced" in a helical formation to reject electromagnetic noise
  • Also part of the formula, is the Monster Patented Bandwidth Balanced Multiple Gauge Wire Networks which separate high and low frequency networks for greater sonic impact.

The Gamelink 300X is probably the best fit for most gamers, as the S-Video connection is included on most new TVs. Visually, the 300X helps retain the purity of the picture and reduce interference. It does this because the picture is transmitted through two signals, known as Luma and Chroma. By separating the two signals, the picture clarity is greatly increased.

But What Does All this Jargon Mean? (Monster Cable Performance in Layman's Terms)
The truth of the matter is, you don't have to understand a word of all that technical reap the benefits of the Monster Cable Team's hard work. The truth is always in the results, and I have to say I experienced that same feeling when I used these cables as I did seeing a DVD for the first time. It's like a veil is lifted from over your eyes. I sat there for a bit and wondered if these colors existed in real life, outside of the video gaming world. Crisp, clear, and unbelievably vibrant - these Gamelink 300X cables made me go through my Xbox game collection and just playing each one of them for a while to see the difference.

Not willing to leave it at that, especially when games like Mad Dash Racing have such killer soundtracks, I had to experience the improved sound quality. While I've yet to acquire a home theatre surround sound system (which I'm afraid might have to happen sooner now that I know I have the power of the cables), the sound was markedly improved. Don't let the audio be neglected, try to set your machine up to experience the best of both worlds!

In the End....
Haven't you learned your lesson the first time? Don't wait forever like you did with that DVD player, go get these cables! If you bought an Xbox, odds are you did it because you did the research and saw the console system had the most powerful "engine" under it's hood. So don't let that power go to waste now. Using standard cables is like pouring low-grade gasoline into a Ferrari. Enhance and fully experience your gaming, let Monster Cable show you the way!
