Syracuse University's Kris Burgos Takes Home the National Championship at the Xbox Live Hoop Madness 2 Tournament
Tournament champion wins $1,000 cash prize and $2500 scholarship
SAN ANTONIO — April 2, 2004 — In the country’s largest and most competitive on-line college basketball tournament, Kris Burgos, a sophomore from Syracuse University, defeated the nation’s top “ESPN College Hoops” gamers to win the “Xbox Live Hoop Madness 2 Tournament.” Jay Williams, former NCAA Superstar and Duke alum, was on hand as Burgos cut down the virtual nets as the tournament champion.
Links Bar and Grill on the famed river walk in San Antonio, Texas, played host to the “Xbox Live Hoop Madness 2 Tournament Finals” where hundreds of college basketball fans gathered to see who would take home Xbox Live™’s most prestigious college basketball title. To preview Monday night’s highly anticipated Men’s National Championship game, each semifinalist competed as one of the 2004 Final Four teams.
In the “Xbox Live Hoop Madness 2 National Championship Game” it came down to a showdown between Kris Burgos from Syracuse University playing as the UConn Huskies against Alex Carroll, a freshman from Georgia Tech playing as his beloved Yellow Jackets. Thanks to a tremendous game from the cyber version of Charlie Villanueva, Kris Burgos defeated Alex Carroll’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 95-79.
The Syracuse University sophomore was awarded the grand prize of $1000, a $2500 scholarship, two tickets to the NCAA men’s college basketball Final Four, the “Xbox Live Hoop Madness 2 Trophy” and the title of “Xbox Live Hoop Madness 2 Tournament Champion.” Following the title game Burgos received a challenge to go one-on-one against Jay Williams in an “ESPN College Hoops” grudge match.
“It was great to be back at the site of the Final Four watching two elite gamers go head to head with so much at stake,” said tournament spokesperson Jay Williams. “Kris Burgos really knows how to play ‘ESPN College Hoops. If UConn dominates the way Kris did tonight, there’s no question they will take home the National Championship on Monday night”.
The “Xbox Live Hoop Madness 2 Tournament” began in February by crowning 32 on-campus tournament champions from some of the country’s top colleges and universities. From those 32 on-campus champions, 16 elite gamers received an automatic bid into the “Xbox Live Hoop Madness 2 Tournament” based on the real life success of their NCAA men’s college basketball teams. Using Xbox Live, the top 16 collegiate college hoops gamers battled online in a single elimination tournament format for an all expense paid trip to San Antonio to compete in the “Xbox Live Hoop Madness 2 Tournament Final Four.”
