In the near future, a terrorist attack leaves Washington DC in complete decimation. Following this, the entire US, in a time of unrest and turmoil, splits into several different nations which effectively puts the country at war with itself. Therefore, you become charged with the task of uniting the United States by any means necessary. So is the plot of Shattered Union, the latest turn-based strategy game from the folks at 2K. Shattered Union has you fighting it out against other factions of the US in hex-grid based struggle.

Shattered Union gives you control of one of seven US factions: Greater California, Arcadia (Pacific Northwest), New Republic of Texas, Heartland (Midwest and Great Plains states), Dixieland, Yankee Union and the European Expeditionary Force. As you battle it out for superiority, you can see real landmarks from around the US, like the Golden Gate Bridge or the New York skyline, that give you a real sense that you are battling in those locations.

Even though the game is turn-based, most of the action unfolds in real-time. You can order in planes to bomb an area and watch as they fly in and blow up the location in question. You can also nuke areas of the map, and doing so not only causes a lot of immediate damage, but also makes it so the affected area has nuclear fallout, meaning that units that pass through the area will suffer from radiation poisoning and foot units will die before too long.

The action in the game unfolds with a top-down view of the action. As I mentioned earlier, the game also has a hex-grid, similar to a table top strategy game, meaning that fans of these should feel right at home here. However, if these aren’t quite your bag, then you are able to turn these off at your choice.

Strategy fans should definitely take note, as Shattered Union hits this fall.
